‘To Be’, or not be well? Drama and theatre in education
The ‘To Be’ project explored how Drama in Education and Theatre in Education can be used in collaboration with teachers to support the wellbeing of children and especially those at risk of exclusion.
In September 2020, we held an online project event attended by over 50 people from across Europe in which we asked poignant questions about the pandemic: Can we feel well in this world? Can our wellbeing be isolated from the wellbeing of others? Can we take care of our own wellbeing while the wellbeing of our countries is in danger?
Using Theatre in Education, the event helped us collaborate with teachers in ways that support their professional and personal wellbeing, supporting their young people’s wellbeing in turn – especially those children and young people at risk of exclusion or leaving school prematurely.
The project produced a guidebook plus curriculum guidance and research discovered throughout the project, helping drama practitioners, teachers and policy makers to understand the impact of drama-based pedagogies and practice.
Big Brum’s ‘To Be’ was funded by the European Union’s Erasmus Plus programme in partnership with other educational theatre companies across Europe including Luzanky in Czechia, Nyitott Kör in Hungary and Stop Klatka in Poland.
